What The Walking Dead Can Teach You About Fashion

AMC’s The Walking Dead may be about zombies and gore, but I find a style lesson in all walks of life. I know you probably didn’t see this post coming, but bear with me…I promise it all makes perfect sense.

1. Be Kick Ass-ier!

Our first lesson is that an olive green, military, fatigue, or moto jacket can make any outfit a little kick ass-ier! I have tried this one myself. I purchased a pink and black fancy club dress from Express, expecting to only wear it to clubs and parties. Not any more! With my black moto jacket and some funky combats, I can wear it to lunch at a greasy spoon diner with my homies now. I have an olive colored utility vest that I throw on with any outfit I want to casual down! It all gives you this sexy, Lara Croft, I-could-kick-your-ass-if-I-wanted-to vibe! Genius! Those blood soaked ladies of the zombie apocalypse always look so Budweiser Saturday night chic!

2. Flannel Ain’t So Bad

I know we are always looking for ways to make things more dressy, like punching up a t-shirt and jeans with heels. But, I find myself often having the opposite problem. I am not a huge fan of sneakers or flats, and I only own one baseball cap. This limits my casual options considerably. So I am always looking for ways to make my stilettos or fedora’s look more Saturday afternoon instead of Saturday night. These brilliant WD ladies have shown me that a tank under a button down (preferably flannel) is appropriate at any time of the day or night and at any time of the year. It just makes you look effortless! Any amount of makeup, hair extensions, and even fake eye lashes won’t look high maintenance with this shirt combo. You can get that careless, just rolled out of bed look, even if you look like you could be on the cover of Vogue without Photoshop. Just throw on a snap button-down or a flannel top with a tank and go. Guys will just see a really down to earth, possibly hippy chick with impossibly long lashes.

3. The Cardi Set

These ladies have definitely taught me that sweater sets are no longer for the frumpy old teacher!  I know I am not the only person who thinks Andrea and Carol pull off the Cache mom shirts and sweater sets really well! Again, I was my own guinea pig on this little experiment. I paired my tan knit cami and matching cardigan with a pair of cropped fatigue cargo pants and brown platform heels. It went well. It’s all about keeping it young and fresh. Of course if you wear it with jeans and Sketchers, you’re gonna look like a really old lady. But, if you keep it modern and pair your set with some stilettos, a cute pair of skinnies, or a funky statement necklace, you’re good to go. Check me out in my purple vintage cardi from J. Crew, and other outfits from my totally apocalyptic Walking Dead inspired picture day.
