Janelle Monae Inspired Style
So I may be being a little biased for this week’s artist spotlight. After all, this woman did just release the Soar Thumb Blog official anthem track- Q.U.E.E.N! But, in all fairness, I have loved this woman since 2010 and she is the artist I most closely relate to. Besides the fact that the booty really doesn’t lie…Janelle Monae is a self-proclaimed odd ball. She started from nothing and built her own following organically, and she did it all by being herself. Much like what I’m trying to do here on Soar Thumb! I really wish I had someone famous like her to look up to when I was a teenager. Someone who makes being weird and black and dark skinned and well-spoken look incredibly stylish. *sigh* She’s my hero.
I like Janelle Monae’s style because of two distinct reasons. First, she is always stunning, and preserves her sexy without ever compromising her integrity. In other words, we think she’s hot and she doesn’t have to get naked for us to think so. Secondly, she thinks outside the box in terms of silhouette and style. She is so confident whenever you see her, rather it’s in boxed or spiked shoulder pads or suspenders and Oxfords with cigarette pants. Picking out clothes is half the battle, having the confidence to pull off whatever odd clothing you want to wear is the key.
When deciding on this Janelle Monae inspired outfit, I knew I had to find some suspenders! I also knew I wanted to do some skinny jeans. I can’t really pull off the cigarette pant myself because of my insanely huge (but loved) thighs. So a slim fitting jean was the best option. The striped spring sweater is vintage and I chose it because of a very cute photo shoot the singer did in something similar it was an out of the ordinary fashion choice for her and spoke volumes to me. The Oxfords have ‘Ode to Janelle Monae’ written all over them, and I can only hope she would be proud of the pewter color choice as well. The hair was the simplest decision. You don’t have a Janelle inspired look without a pompadour! For people with less naturally shapeable hair, I recommend the Amy Winehouse rendition of the style. You could even go for the Miguel type of pomp if you’ve got enough hair gel!
How would you rock a Janelle Monae inspired outfit?! Enjoy the pics and here’s the video to her new single in case you wanna dance alone late at night! BTW look out for her new album Electric Lady coming soon and Metropolis is dope!!!
-Even if it makes others uncomfortable/ I wanna love who I am!
